Who are the Osprey Episcopalians? e Rev. Amy Slater, Chaplain for the UNF Osprey Episcopalians What do you believe? I wonder what I’m really called to do with my life? ese seemingly simple questions of Christian identity are on the hearts and minds of students as I walk across the UNF Campus as the new Episcopal Chaplain. College is a time of critical thinking and a time of making meaning. I meet students who question or doubt what they’ve intuitively believed in since childhood. I also meet students who are experiencing a new curiosity and calling they are trying to understand. For too long the church has drawn a line, as if our responsibility to young adults and their formation ends at conrmation, or high school graduation. It does not. We covenant, on behalf of the whole Christian Church, to guide and nurture those being baptized by word and deed, with love and prayer, and encourage them to know and follow Jesus, as faithful members of Christ’s church for all time. With the guidance and support of Bishop Howard, the Diocese of Florida, and the wonderful parishioners at the Church of the Redeemer, we are laying the foundation for a collegiate community of faith at the University of North Florida: the Osprey Episcopalians- Birds of Pray. Together with Devanne Jones and Lexy Fields, two collegiate peer ministers, our motto emerged from the Book of Common Prayer and our baptismal covenant: faith, fellowship and outreach. In the covenant we found our identity. e cornerstone of our time together is celebrating Eucharist on Wednesdays in the student union. roughout the week we lead a Bible study at Starbucks, support the work of the interfaith community at UNF, meet with each other in fellowship and oer outreach opportunities for the students on campus to serve others. And although we do not yet have dedicated space or a chapel to worship, we are building a community that lives out our baptismal vows and renews our identity as Disciples of Christ who seek to “continue in the apostle teaching, seek and serve Christ in all persons” and “strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being” through the power of the Holy Spirit. e Osprey Episcopalians are thankful to be part of the household of God and share with the Good people of the Diocese of Florida in God’s eternal priesthood!
