Nominations & Elections at the 2026 Diocesan Convention

The Diocesan Nominating Committee for the 183rd Annual Diocesan Convention has been formed to present a slate of nominees for the Diocesan Convention (September 12, 2026) to fill the expired or uncompleted terms of the individuals now serving.

Positions to be elected at our 2026 Diocesan Convention are as follows: 

Diocesan Council: Lay

• 1 Lay: First Coast East (3-Year Term)

Disciplinary Board

• 2 Clergy (3-Year Term)
• 2 Lay (3-Year Term)

Standing Committee

• 1 Clergy (3-Year Term)
• 1 Lay (3-Year Term)

Sewanee Board of Trustees

• 1 Clergy (3-Year Term)

Nominations will close at 5 pm on Friday July 24, 2026.

Notes: No person in the process for ordination will be allowed to be a nominee for a Diocesan or General Convention Office. The process begins with the initial meeting with the Bishop/Standing Committee and ends with ordination. Transitional Deacons are considered in process.

Deacons must meet with the Standing Committee and obtain their approval before having their names placed in nomination for a Diocesan or General Convention office.

Background on Roles and Requirements of Each Position

Diocesan Council: Lay

Diocesan Council acts as a vestry would between Diocesan conventions. They conduct the business of the Diocese as needed.

Lay nominees must be adult communicants (18 or older) in good standing (see definition below).
Each Lay nominee must be a member of a parish/mission that is located within the region being elected. For this election, the lay position being elected is for First Coast East for a 3-year term.

Note: Florida Statutes Chapter 617 would consider Diocesan Council the equivalent of a Board of Directors which requires members to be 18 years of age or older.

Lay members are elected by the diocesan convention by region.

Disciplinary Board

The Disciplinary Board serve and gather at the call from the Bishop/Standing Committee or from the General Council for the Diocese in the case of a trial for a priest or deacon.

To stand for election for Disciplinary Board clerical nominees must be canonically resident in the Diocese of Florida.

Lay nominees must be adult (16 or older) communicants in good standing (see definition below).

The term is for 3 years. A member shall not be elected to the Disciplinary Board for more than two successive terms. A Disciplinary Board member cannot serve also on the Standing Committee at the same time. There are 5 clergy and 4 lay members of the Disciplinary Board.

Standing Committee

The Standing Committee is the council of advice to the Diocesan Bishop and becomes the Ecclesiastical authority for the Diocese if there is no Bishop.

To stand for election for Standing Committee, clerical nominees must be canonically resident in the Diocese of Florida.

Lay nominees must be adult (16 or older) communicants in good standing (see definition below).

The committee meets quarterly or more often when necessary. The term is for three years and a person may serve successive terms.

A Standing Committee member cannot serve also on the Disciplinary Board at the same time. There are 3 lay and 3 clergy members of the Standing Committee.

Sewanee Board of Trustees

Clergy and Lay members of the Board of Trustees from the Diocese of Florida are elected for three-year terms. There are 1 clergy and 2 lay members. The elected members will serve a three-year term beginning on July 1st of the year following their election. This change is being initiated to be in line with the Board rules regarding the terms of service for its members.

Canons of the General Convention  TITLE I   CANON I.17.2
Communicants: Sec. 2 (a) All members of this Church who have received Holy Communion in this Church at least three times during the preceding year are to be considered communicants of this Church.
Adult Communicants: (b) For the purpose of statistical consistency throughout the Church, communicants sixteen years of age and over are to be considered adult communicants. The exception is Diocesan Council which requires the nominee to be 18 or older per Florida Statues Chapter 617 since Diocesan Council is considered by Florida law a Board of Directors.
Communicants in Good Standing: All communicants of this Church who for the previous year have been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and have been faithful in working, praying, and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God, are to be considered communicants in good standing.
