Reverend Samuel Johnson Howard announced the creation of an award to be presented during the 175th anniversary year of The Episcopal Diocese of Florida. The Bishop’s Star Award honors those who have given most generously of their God-given time, talent, treasure and leadership toward the support of the parish in which they worship. In the seal of The Episcopal Diocese of Florida, John the Evangelist is shown walking through the palm trees of Florida, carrying in one hand the Holy Bible, and in the other, a communion chalice. Seven stars shine down from the sky above him. The Bishop’s Star Award is modeled after the seven golden stars in the Diocesan Seal which represent the seven original churches of the Diocese in 1838: Christ Church, Pensacola; Christ Church, now Trinity Church, Apalachicola; St. John’s, Tallahassee; St. John’s, Jacksonville, now the Cathedral; St. Joseph’s, now St. James’, Port St. Joe; St. Paul’s, Key West and Trinity, St. Augustine. Nominations are now being accepted through the Rector or Priest-in-charge of your church. We hope that you will prayerfully consider those who, in the life of your parish and its many ministries, have made the greatest contributions through their leadership and that you will submit a statement of nomination, stating in 250 words or less the reasons you believe this individual should be one of the recipients of The Bishop’s Star Award.
